My name is Nicolas Carvajal Uribe and in January 2012 I will be rowing 3,000 miles solo and unassisted across the Atlantic Ocean to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Cancer is completely indiscriminate. It disregards ethnic, cultural, religious, and geographical divides and will affect 1 in 3 of us at some point in our lives. In fact, nearly all of us will at some point know someone who has battled against cancer.

I, myself, know two people in particular which is why this cause is close to my heart. The first is my brother who battled and beat Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1994, and the second was my grandfather who sadly succumbed to multiple cancers in 2010.

Seeing first-hand the new lease of life granted to someone who has beaten cancer and the devastation caused when that battle is lost has made me want to ensure more stories are told by survivors rather than their bereft loved ones and for this reason I am rowing for Cancer Research UK.

Join me on this adventure and share the highs and lows of my attempt to row an Ocean. At times it might not be pretty, it might not be all plain sailing, but it will definitely always be interesting!
